Santa Rosa rebuilt thousands of homes after the 2017 Tubbs Fire, which CAL FIRE records as burning 36,807 acres and destroying 5,636 structures (CAL FIRE). In 2020 the Glass Fire, 67,484 acres and 1,528 structures destroyed per CAL FIRE (CAL FIRE), burned homes in the Skyhawk neighborhood (NBC Bay Area). Many of those roofs are now several winters old.
Coffey Park
Coffey Park sits on flat ground north of downtown and lost more than 1,000 homes in 2017, by the Press Democrat's count (Press Democrat). Its rebuilt roofs are mostly composition shingle on similar-age homes. Priorities: gutter cleaning, checking flashing and pipe boots, and confirming warranties.
Fountaingrove and Skyhawk
These hillside neighborhoods face more wind and wildland exposure. If your address is in a mapped Fire Hazard Severity Zone, your home was likely permitted under California's WUI standards, which call for a Class A roof assembly and ember-resistant construction (OSFM). Keep it that way: keep vents clear and undamaged, keep gutters free of leaves, and use Class A assemblies for any repair.
A rebuild roof checklist
- Find the roof permit, product name and warranties. Register or transfer warranties if needed.
- Look for sealant-only fixes at penetrations that should have been flashed.
- Check solar attachments and their flashing.
- After the first big storm, check the attic for damp spots.
- Book a roof inspection before El Niño storms arrive.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to upgrade my rebuilt roof?
Usually not if it was built to current standards and is in good condition. Maintenance matters most: gutters, vents and flashing.
Can I switch from shingles to metal?
Often yes, with a permit and a tested Class A assembly. Check HOA rules if you have them.
